Riding Hats

We would always recommend that a hat be professionally fitted, however the following can be used as a guide to hat sizes. Measure the circumference of the head at the widest point, one inch above the eye.

Current Hat Safety Standards

BS EN 1384:1997

This standard replaced both the riding hat and jockey skull British Standards. It is exactly the same as EN 1384: 1996 published by the Centre for European Normes in Brussels. This standard may be found prefixed by other initials belonging to the country testing the helmet, e.g. DIN EN 1384:1997. Certain people demand BS EN 1384 because the helmet has been tested in Britain. Though in theory there should be no difference, Germany and Italy have approved helmets that would have failed if tested in Britain. To resolve these differences, a more explicit wording of the standard is being devised.

This European standard is a major leap forward over the previous British standards. Though the height from which helmets are dropped has been reduced, the injury allowed to the brain has been reduced by nearly 40% and bottom edge protection is now required. Chincups have also been banned. All organisations allow this standard to be worn during competitions.

PAS 015:1998

With the official publication of EN 1384 certain differences occurred between PAS 015 and EN 1384 which were not foreseen in 1994. This revision removes those differences as well as addressing new areas of protection which were found in most existing PAS 015 models. Namely - crush resistance and prevention of brain injury when landing on an edged surface. Due to initial problems with more rigid, chincupless helmets, a stability test is also included to limit excessive movement during wearing or a fall.

Body Protectors

We would always recommend a body protector be fitted or checked by an approved body protector fitter. The following tables give details of the measurements for the body protectors we stock. For more information please visit www.airowear.co.uk. A correctly fitting body protector covers the rib cage and extends down the back to the base of your spine.

All of our body protectors are Level 3 BETA Standard (Purple Label):

Protectors providing a level of protection that is considered appropriate for normal horse riding, competitions and for working with horses. Protectors to this level should:

  • Prevent minor bruising that would have produced stiffness and pain.
  • Reduce significant soft tissue injuries to the level of bruising.
  • Prevent a limited number of rib fractures.

To measure for chaps and gaiters the height measurement is taken barefoot from the floor, up the back of the leg to under the knee while in a sitting position. Calf measurement is widest part of the calf measured over breeches.

Glove Sizes & How To Measure

To determine your glove size, you will need a measuring tape. Place the beginning of the tape on your index-finger knuckle and bring the tape across the other knuckles. Continue moving the tape around the palm side of the hand until the tape touches the point where you got started. The point where the tape now meets is your glove size.

Typically, women wear numerical sizes 6, 6 1/2, 7, 7 1/2, or 8 in leather styles. Fabric gloves with a high degree of stretch such as satin and velvet are a "one size fits all" size.

A fine leather glove should fit snugly and should not bag on the hand. Fine, soft glove leather will stretch with the hand.

For the horse

The best way to ensure your new rug fits is to measure an existing one that fits correctly. Lay your rug flat on the ground and measure from the front edge to the back edge as illustrated below:

Horse

Alternatively, if you do not have an existing rug to measure, you need to measure your horse or pony from the centre of their chest, around their shoulders to a line vertical with the top of the tail. This is shown in the image below:

Horse

If you are still unsure as to what size rug you require the following table can be used as a rough guide:

Size of horse
(hh)
Suggested rug size
Size of horse

10.2 3' 6" 14.0 5' 3"
11.0 3' 9" 14.0 5' 3"
11.2 4' 0" 15.0 5' 9"
12.0 4' 3" 15.2 6' 0"
12.2 4' 6" 16.0 6' 3"
13.0 4' 9" 16.2 6' 6"
13.2 5' 0" 17.0 6' 9"

Bits

A correctly fitting bit should have a fingers width on either side of the horses mouth. To ensure your new bit fits correctly measure the length of the mouthpiece from inside of the rings, as illustrated below:

Horse

Most bits are sold in inches, although some European bits (eg KK Ultra) are sold in centimeters.
